  • regular or snyth. oil in newer volvo's???

Hi everyone, i was wondering, is there really that much of a difference between regular(dyno) oil or the synthetic for the newer volvo's? I was reading in the manual that you can easily use regular oil for the car and also the dealership offers both, so i think i can get away with the regular stuff.
the way i see it is this: i can use the regular stuff and change the oil sooner ( about every 4000km), then to use synth. and change every 10-12000km...
does my theory hold water? thanks

Personnaly, I would never go back to conventional oil.
Synthetic oil is much better because:
-better protection of your engine's internal parts
-flows better (remains viscous & liquid) in very cold weather
-doesn't break-down easily is very hot conditions
-conditioning & cleaning additives helps your engine last longer
It's your Volvo, be kind to it. Stay with the synth and keep feeding it Super and you will both be happier

If you are leasing the car and really don't give a crap about Volvos, do what you want, but just make sure it doesn't void your warranty.

Hi Thiery...thanks for answering.. i think i'll switch over to synth...and maybe do the oil changes myself. i bought the car used a few months ago and only have 66500km on the clock..so i think there shouldn't be much damage done.. any oil recommendations? i know castrol is used on these cars, but i'm open for suggestions.thanks

You say: ''then to use synth. and change every 10-12000km...''

I beleive it may be a mistake unless you are a taxi driver or use the car a lot on hiways.

I have a cousin who followed that kind of mileage between oil changes. His car started burning oil because the rings seized.

Myself I will stick with the normal oil change mileage when I use synthetic next winter. The advantages are what is mentioned by others on this post. Too late for this winter to switch.

Go with the synthetic all the way, the benefits have been proven over the regular oil! (doesn't break down as easely, much better low and high temp lubrication ect)
Although synthetic oil doesn't break down as fast as regular oil I wouldn't stretch the oil change interval out too much more. I would go with the recomended change interval for the kind of driving I do.
Oil is cheap compared to an engine!!!!

Personally I always run my volvo with castrol syntec and premium gas, it always start even in cold time like -32C on dash. Oil stay clean and engine run perfectly.

              synthetic oil

better be safe than sorry, last year i had a big prestone leak lower hose
bracket broken suddently, the time that i stop the engine the temps gauge
was in th red zone, chit , on the hill road, at 4000rpm but the engine still ok and no
link of oil,I am sure that the synthetic oil save my engine.
