Ahead of the 2012 New York Auto Show sources offered swedespeed exclusive details on a product built for the Volvo enthusiast.
For the 2013 model year, Volvo will offer 1000 limited edition cream yellow S60 T5-R sedans. This edition brings the T5 model full circle and it will be the first Volvo since 2007 to carry a "R" only badge. We are surprised Volvo chose to drop "Design" from the badge but we could not be happier!
Our source identified the following, "The R models are Volvo's performance heritage and this limited edition product continues the lineage with a unique Polestar engine calibration, and for the first time, Polestar suspension components for the North American market."
The 2013 T5-R exterior styling matches the T6 AWD R-Design model. The current R-Design interior will carry into this model with exclusive yellow stitching and black watch dials in the instrument cluster instead of blue. The Polestar tune will produce 292hp and 285ft/lbs of torque. We were hoping for a multi-spoke alloy wheel, similar to the graphite Titan alloy offered in 1995, but the pictured 18"x8.0 Ixion wheels are still attractive. Pricing has not been set but we were told to expect it to fall between the soon to be launched T5 AWD and T6 AWD. Our source did not provide any details on the future of the T6 with this announcement but eluded that Polestar was not done tuning the T6. Which makes us wonder if another halo R variant could be in the pipeline.
The original 1995 850 T5-R redefined the stereotypical boring, boxy car and offered Volvo buyers a true performance sedan. The 2013 T5-R will excite a new generation of Volvo performance enthusiasts and we look forward to getting behind the wheel.
