  • Help! Swap or Sell, my 10-valve is toast...

Hey everyone, I have 1996 850 GLE Manual 10-valve NA, that has just decided to eat a piston ring this week... I'm stuck without a car and I'm running out of options. I love this car, but its running fenix electronics, and I wouldn't want to swap another 10-valve engine in because I know I'm going to continue to have problems, I would want to swap a 20-valve NA that runs motronic. I can't find much information about doing this swap because of how uncommon it may be.. My question is, what is involved in this swap and is it just a question of swapping the engines wiring harness? How deep in would I have to go to complete this swap?

My other option is buy another 850 thats turbo automatic, take off my manual transmission from the 10-valve, pedals and cables and put them aside to swap the automatic in the summer and hopefully sell the shell....

What would you do? and Would anyone want a pretty good shell to do something with? a trade with cash? I'm going to miss this car!

I wish I had to time to do it, at this point I just need to have a car to get to work...I didnt think it was that easy, for the PIN outs, what would you use for your wiring reference? If it was summer and I had place to keep it I would have swapped it...

I went to see a 95 turbo last night, but it was a poubelle... I'm going to look at a 97 GLT tonight, anyone know if this car should have the 2.4 low pressure turbo or its NA?

For the wiring I used what All Data had to offer, took all the pinouts from the 93 n/a and matched them with the pinouts of the 95 turbo!

        A 97 glt should have a LPT!

The cars you saw, was it the one on the forum that as a blown headgasket!?

we'll guys the car I went to see tonight wasnt a turbo, so confirmed 97 GLT was non turbo, BUT it isnt badged GLT like usual. Its a 20-valve NA, automatic. I'm still going to pick it up, the body is perfect.

I decided I'm going to part out my red car, I'm going to keep what ever I need and I'll post up whats left. Please don't PM me before I post it up though! I won't know what I will keep or not until I have my new 97 and I have a chance to check it out properly.

dude the car was silver, was running wheels from an 850 AWD, 1/2" of bondo on the front fender, trunk didnt align properly, thermostat was stuck open, serpentine tensioner was finished, exhaust was leaking from the flex pipe, check engine light was on, drivers side mirror was cracked, the seats have no more leather on them, it was down to the foam in the front. I was like

The guy wanted 1800$ and told me on the phone the car was in top shape. I lol'ed. He was a bro too.

The car I went to see tonight the "97 GLT" ended up being NA. Weird eh? I'm going to check out the vin when I get it.

well you said it wasn't badged ''GLT'' so I think it is not a GLT. in fact GLT is the Fully loaded model. So the car you bought is a normal 850 with all the GLT option except the LPT engine.

We'll honestly I'm not even disappointed, this car is so nice it doesn't even matter its non turbo, and I have a manual transmission to swap on it, I'm really happy.

I have a new car! To give you guys an idea of my week lol This was when I picked up the new black car this morning. Found this one on Kijiji.

This was this afternoon, I spent the day taking parts off the red car and started installing them and doing the maintenance on the new black Swedish Machine.

                      Hello old friends!

                      This was tonight

This was the 10-Valve just before it broke. 10-Valve minus one piston I should say :/

This was the 10-valve today, It didn't deserve the cursed motor it had inside it!

And this is what my life is like right now 2/3 cars with no engines.... shoot me. lol

I didnt have enough time to take the rear suspension off the red car today, but I want to swap the lowered struts on the black car asap, roll the fenders and put my spacers back on I'm loving this car

I decided I'm also going to swap the interiors, as of tomorrow night I have a full Tan leather interior for sale (PM me), almost all panels will be included (I'm going to keep anything that was broken from my red car when I swap it over to the black car) and includes all the seats and will also include the upper dash pad and all door panels, the B and C pillar trim, the carpet, the rear deck panel, and probably the center console too, I havn't decided yet, I'll be keeping the glove box cover though. The seats are in ok condition, they are not torn but they are slightly worn. I'll post up pictures when I have it all out of the black car.

Hopefully by the end of the week the interior will be swapped, the brakes will be swapped and I'll have finished swapping the suspension, I'll post up more parts for sale then.
