tube disconnected..what is it and is it critical?

Hey folks,i decided to take a peek under the hood today (there was a disturbance in the force!)...so i checked my oil and it was okay, i took the light and started looking. I noticed a tube that had disconnected itself and seems to be missing a "joint" section....if i'm looking at the engine, at the oil filler cap, to the left of it right where the spark plug cover is, there is a plastic tube that starts there goes in between the intake manifold and is supposed to go into a box? is this the pcv box? well from the manifold , it is disconnected and seems to be missing a piece..here is a pic of the tube coming down:



Here is a pic of the tube where it's disconnected..i was looking around and can't find the missing piece.


is this really bad for the engine and other componencts? is it a big job to replace the piece?

Fabs,

This tube is made of plastic and it is used to recirculate fumes coming out of the engine. The tube is accordeon like in two places. It seems broken at the bottom portion in your picture.

I would suggest that you replace it, because your system is now partially functionnal and open to the air without filtration. It is connected to the oil separator box under the intake manifold.

When I look at the schematic, the tube is fasten with a bague at his base. Consequently the intake manifold would need to be removed in order to replace the hose. Even though it is not a very expensive part, the $ involved are significant because of the labor aspect.

May be someone will come up with a more inventive approach/solution to it.

PS: A broad estimate is about 3-4 hours labors time, the replacement part with a new intake manifold gasket.

DGM ya i found out the part after....it's made of hard plastic and is quite brittle, i will try to get a new piece. I will see if i can install it myself without taking off the manifold, i can fit my hand easily underneith the manifold and might be able to work like that...i'll keep you posted on how it goes...

May be a screw type collar would be more easier to install than the crimp type.

DGM you bet!!! hahaha if you can do it yourself, why not!!!! i saw that there is a new (revised) part for it, and it seems to be of one piece softer rubber tubing (much better design and less chance of breaking).

update....
Well i managed to change the piece..no problem, took no time to do...i popped up the broken tube from the carbon box, came right out,,,and the one going into the crankcase, installed new one, and i'm good to go. It took a few minutes to take off the intercooler tube, spark plug cover off..the car runs good and i find it idles a bit smoother now...

Nice to know that you easily did it.

Have you installed the crimp collars as shown in the picture or it is now unnecessary because of part revision .

DGM ya it was pretty easy to do. I think Volvo realized that the origional part was a bit flimsy and brittle and went with the new softer tube style.
I used a criimp collar on the top of the tube at the crankcase but a regular screw type at the bottom on the canister...easier to install. Now, if only it would be that easy to change the WHOLE pcv system! hahah
